Les Gites Fleuris - Home Page

Centrally located in the Dordogne, near the majestic Chateau de Hautefort, Les Gites Fleuris rests on a tranquil hilltop in the scenic countryside of France. The vacation cottages are 2 traditional stone Perigordian farmhouses, located on a quiet semi-private lane, framed by acres of orchards, forests, and gardens.

The two fully equipped rental houses are the Wisteria, a 3 bedroom holiday home perfect for families, and La Petite Rose, a romantic 1 bedroom home ideal for couples or small families. Both gites have been restored to preserve their traditional character while being fully updated with modern conveniences for your self-catering holiday.

Outdoors is the swimming pool with sun deck and chairs, a relaxing heated jacuzzi spa, individual outdoor dining terraces with barbecues, all have the magnificent valley view. The property is child-friendly offering: a play area, swing set, raised fort with rock climbing wall, toys, ping-pong, badminton/volleyball, football nets, mini golf, horseshoes, boules, croquet, hammocks, and open space in the acreage and nearby forest to just wander and explore.

Local services are an easy stroll down a tranquil country lane to the local village: 1km to a boulangerie, a grocery store (with international foods, fresh fish and butcher), and a bank. 2km to tabac/newsagent, post office, and the office of tourism; 2.5 km to a swimming and fishing lake.

Hautefort is the perfect location to explore the many famous historic sites of the Dordogne! The spectacular castle: "Chateau de Hautefort"is a 17th c Castle famous for its architecture and French and English gardens. Visit the "Museum of Medicine" which depicts life in a 17th c Hospice.The region is dotted with many castles, medieval villages, pre-historic sites, Cro-Magnon man caves (Lascaux), grottes, troglodyte sites, Bastille towns and abbeys. The area offers many sporting activities including: tennis, basketball, soccer, canoeing, fishing, hot air ballooning, ropes par course, paintball, and quad riding. And not to forget a wine tasting day trip to the Wine regions of Bordeaux and Bergerac!

After a day of touring the historic sites, you can enjoy the renowned food in the Perigord: black truffles, canard, pate de foie gras, cepes, cheese; with many good restaurants in the area. Ask the owners to recommend the available vegetarian options in the area!

Our travels recently led us to southwestern France, where we had a great experience at Les Gîtes Fleuris in the Dordogne region of the Aquitaine. We thought we had taken a wrong turn as we drove up the dirt road, past chickens and horses and shirtless Frenchmen watering their flowers at 9 p.m. Then we saw the gorgeous farmhouses shown on the Web site, on top of a hill overlooking sprawling farmland and beautiful countryside. We stayed in their Petite Rose house, a romantic and rustic one-bedroom cottage built in the 16th century. The list of amenities includes wireless Internet, a pool, hot tub, outdoor barbecue and patio, bicycles and ping pong. The best resource, in our opinion, was the owners, Larry and Renata Barnes. They live in the main house with their two lovely daughters and are an amazing source of local knowledge. Renata, a former travel agent, gave us great tips on what to see and what not to see, and both were always good for sharing a glass of wine on the patio. The town where the chateau is located was surprisingly untouched by time. The Bordeaux wine country is less than two hours away, but the best part of the area was the Dordogne River, where for a few euros you can take a leisurely, daylong canoe trip past castles and unbeatable scenery.
